Getting a lot of questions about Atlantis and my involvement in a possible movie and the new show, and that sort of thing, so here's the latest...

No plans for a return to Stargate I'm sad to say.

I caused a bit of a fuss, with a twitter I sent out the other day about the subject, and thought I had better clarify.... I haven’t heard anything from anyone about an Atlantis film. I mean, I hear/read what you do (what, I can't be a nerd too!?) but nobody has approached me or talked specifics, either confirming or denying the possibility of a movie. When Atlantis was first canceled, an SGA movie was talked about like it was a sure thing. That in not the case now. Knowing that, I’ve got to think that it’s not going to happen. Hopefully I will be proven wrong!

The cancellation of a television series is always a bit messy. I often end up feeling a bit bruised and sore during the process, and Atlantis is no exception. I'm finding that it's even harder with Stargate, as it's a franchise that dares to continue without me! (crazy I know!) I had such an amazing time on that show, so I'm very envious of other people experiencing it all for the first time, working in the same studios, spouting the same techno-babble and eating my donuts (see what I mean!) Having been so invested in a project and in such a fantastic role for so long, it's not easy going cold turkey! McKay Detox is a drag!...in fact I'm not sure I ever want to get rid of the guy entirely!

I have never denied that I am unhappy and sad that Atlantis is over. I hate not being able to play Rodney McKay anymore. But that's the life you lead as an actor. You ride into a show, you play your part, and then you're off again, looking for another show in need of a new character to cause trouble and screw it all up for everybody...my hope is that it will be the one I'm working on right now!

The Untitled David Hewlett sci fi Project

I’m very eager for this to work out. I've been developing a number of things since A Dog's Breakfast but I am dying to get back, both behind, and in front of the camera (difficult to do simultaneously I'd have to say!) and be back as part of your regularly scheduled television programming. So please keep your fingers crossed and know that you'll be the first to know when I know something or know something is going to happen (if you know what I mean, you know?)...and certainly send word if there's something that you can help make happen!

Cheers,

D!

The interwebz ate my post AGAIN!

First rule of dGeek: Always copy your post in case the board gets hungry and eats it. Let's see how great my memory is:

I was one of those bitter fans that said that when Atlantis was canceled, the movie would not be made. All the while, I was praying that I was wrong, but since you, David, aren't the only one that has said it may be doubtful, it's sounding more and more to be unlikely to be made. (hello run on sentence!) This is unfortunate for us fans as we may not get any closure, and I imagine it may be the same for the actors as well. It's a pity as I think there were many more stories to be told via Atlantis. Thank God for fan fiction! smilies/cheesy.gif

That being said, I'm very glad the cancellation has given you the opportunity to pursue projects that you are passionate about. It's very exciting to hear about all the irons you have in the fire and I can't wait to see them all come to fruition!

May I ask is any of your Atlantis alum will appear in Judas Run? *cough*joeflanigan*cough*jasonmamoa*cough* (Sorry, I just had to ask! smilies/tongue.gif)

Take care & happiness always!

You're not alone, David. A lot of folks (myself included) are very unhappy about what happened with Atlantis...there was a lot of potential left in that series, in my opinion, and it bothers me to think that we won't ever see the Atlantis cast together on screen again. There are still the novels to consider (some of which I own, and I'm in the process of collecting the rest), so I suppose I shouldn't really complain. Atlantis will live on in print, if not in television.

I won't say anything about Stargate Universe, mainly because A)I'd be repeating a lot of things that have already been said and B)it's just not worth it, to me. I've already made up my mind regarding that series, and that's all there is to be said about it.

Congratulations on the progress of Judas Run so far - I'm eager to see what happens with it!

I have to say, I cried, and yelled at my TV (and shortly after, my computer screen), I screamed profusely when I heard that Atlantis was cancelled. I still don't understan what the heck they were thinking. I mean, Woolsey was finally being developed and having a decent role (I loved seeing The Doctor and wished for more hologram jokes like when the doors to the briefing room didn't open). Rodney finally got the girl! I don't care that people don't like it; the geek got the girl. I will always and forever cheer that on. The stories! my GODS the stories!!! They were just getting better and better, especially when they set the bar with The Shrine (which will always and forever be my favourite SGA episode, you and Kate were simply brilliant).

I will seriously miss seeing Rodney every week. He was my favourite from the very beginning. A smartass, sarcastic genious Canadian? Come on! No question! (This coming from a fellow Canadian, of course) And I really hope we'll see more of him. I'm telling you, if they don't go through with their promise of an SGA movie, I'll go on strike. Don't know what kind of strike, but I will.

I'm totally psyched about a new show, especially one we're gonna see you starring in! Don't hesitate to pick up that iPhone of yours and Tweet us when you get some info on it! Won't be Rodney mcKay, but it'll still be you, so you know, yippee! smilies/grin.gif

Good luck with everything! Right fingers are crossed for SGA and left fingers crossed for Midnight Run!!!

Yours in squirreliness,
Mandi

Yeah, I think we all feel like McKay will always be around.

Who's been eating your donuts? I'll fly out there and stop them myself!

I'm hoping that the Atlantis movie is just going to be later. Better late than never. However, it's been so long and you guys haven't heard... I am nervous about it, too.

Good luck (or break a leg) with the new projects! I've got a slew of family and friends asking about what you're doing next. YES! I have them all trained that when you come out with a movie, I force them to watch it. smilies/grin.gif

Thanks for keeping us posted.

And THANK YOU for the chat room! It's fantastic! smilies/cheesy.gif

I am so excited to hear that you are working on a new movie - and sci-fi to boot! I can't wait to see how it turns out smilies/cheesy.gif!

The whole SGA thing is upsetting to all of us, it seems, but I will say that the upper-heads who said that we would like whatever they made because they made it/it is "Stargate" were so very, very wrong. I would watch any movie you made, or starred in, a billion times before I touched their Stargate 90210. It's the characters and actors that made me love Atlantis, not the franchise name.

candor - what a concept!
written by Kathleen Sweeney, August 06, 2009
Thanks for being so straightforward with us about the possibility of an SGA movie. Although the producers (Mr. Malozzi, specifically) keep talking about it as a possibility, the fact that none of the actors seem to have been contacted doesn't make it seem very realistic.

Great news about your new possibilities! And thanks for continuing to share peeks into your daily life with Jane and wee Baz - I love the stories of him howling at the moon and smooching your action figure. You do an admirable job balancing fan interaction with maintaining your privacy.

Glad you still have things in the works. Being unemployed can really suck!

As far as helping make things happen, let me know if I can help and I will. I'm a graphic designer, learning to be a programmer and worked for many, many, many moons in TV ad sales. Advertising is kinda my thing, you know? smilies/wink.gif

No SG:A film? Well, colour me 'sad but unsurprised'...smilies/angry.gif

From the moment that The Powers That Be announced the cancellation of Atlantis and the green-light for SG:90210 in the same 24 hour period, it always seemed that they had thrown Atlantis under the bus to concentrate on their new shiny. That perception wasn't helped by the subsequent run-around given to fans who asked for clarification on who had pulled the plug - with TPTB, Sky-Fy and MGM all denying it was their call.

As the months have passed with no firm details of the promised film, it's hard not to suspect that some of the players have just been yanking fandom's chain to stop us wandering off (Yeah, they really, reallydon't know us...) until they can WOW us with their FAB! NEW! YOUNG! show, Stargate: Gallactica.

They don't get it.

It's never going to be about how good or bad SG:U is, because it's never going to be Atlantis. I loved the characters of Atlantis and what the actors did with the writing. I was a fan of the SHOW, not a fan of the FRANCHISE.

It's obvious that the production team think they are the main attraction and we'll follow them anywhere - that's not only patronising to the fans, it's downright insulting to the excellent cast that they have treated so shabbily.

It's hard to keep any respect for a production team that can do all this and denigrate their LEAD character on a regular basis (hell, Sheppard didn't even get a mention in the dvd blurb on the back of Season five. And they spelled Ronon's name wrong...) Many of us feared that if there was a film they'd plow the TEAM dynamic even further into the ground by marrying off Mckay, killing Sheppard, giving Ronon even fewer lines and actually going the whole hog and replacing Teyla with a cardboard cut-out.

It's hard to have any faith in their future choices when we believe that we deserved better and we know that you did.

Oh, and I meant to add...in my experience the actors are almost always among the last to know for this stuff. At least in my old life they were. We never called talent until the rest of the pre- work was signed and sealed. So don't give up hope just yet!smilies/grin.gif

SGA Movie that's a myth
written by geb, August 06, 2009
I was also one of those who felt completely cheated out when Atlantis was cancelled. It was like loosing a old friend. It just didn't make sense especially so early into season 5. Such a shame, there is still so many stories to tell. The promise of an Atlantis movie always felt flat to me as well, just a way to calm the fans down but it never felt true to me. I think MGM is just waiting to see how their new baby SGU is doing before they will come up with some lame excuse for not making it. I will certainly not be watching SGU, the way that they dismissed Atlantis just left a sour taste in my mouth and although I really like Robert Carlyle and Justin Louis, my heart is just not into it. I do wish you good luck with your new project. I certainly hope you will get a go at it. Times are though but it sure sounds promising. I will keep my fingers cross.

I have a feeling after the 1st season of SGU, if their ratings tank, an alternate Rodney might be appearing in their universe.

I'm also hoping that you and Flanigan can hook up again. You guys are just so good together, it really would be a waste not to have that happen.

Keeping my fingers crossed and looking forward to "Judas Run!"

Sad, but admittedly not terribly surprised about the SGA movie... You never know though, it could happen. Serenity got made after Fox mucked up Firefly, so it's not in the realm of impossible...

Anyway, either way, can't wait to see you in a show again! Would also love to see some of the SGA cast doing a show or movie with you... Can't get enough of you and Paul in ADB, would love to see you and Flanigan working together again too!

Shame that Sanctuary possibility didn't work out.

I'm very much looking forward to Judas Run when (although it would be more realistic to say 'if') we get it Down Under. I'm already hanging out for the DVD!

I hope everything goes well with Judas Run, and if there's anything we can do just let us know and we'll be there! (Not literally cause you're a long way away from where I am, but I am definately figuratively there. Or if there is anything I can do from here, that would probably work out alot better. Either way, I will definately be spreading the word, Judas Run! (OK, two words))

2 of my fav's the shrine and duet, man can you act!! The husband and I just fell over with those 2, you are very talented and it just sucks!! about atlantis!! We also feel the same about what went on with Brad Wright and co. , many people have already voiced their disapproval, and he STILL won't own up to it! I think MALLOZZI feels bad about it , but i think you know he has to watch his step so he can keep his job too! Many of us- your fans-I hate that word- follow his blog and we see comments all the time about what a raw deal that Atlantis got! Soo, Continued success, and lets see some pics of the baz boy, maybe an appearence at the con in LA in nov.? we would love to be able to talk in person. Sheryl

Wow David I am looking forward to "Judas Run" Hey I like that title. And looking forward to your next "projects". Wow, wonder what these projects will be? You have me curious. I miss Rodney too. He's my fave, well him and John Sheppard, ooops I mean Lt. Colonel John Sheppard. It would be great if the SGA Movies were a go, and it will totally miff us SGA Fans off if it does not happen all we can do is hope.

Hey David still am giggling after Polaris.

Atlantis will continue...
written by Robert von Heeren, August 06, 2009
Hi, I was also very sad about the end of Atlantis as I watched season 5 recently. It is really a great show (no past tense smilies/wink.gif ). At first I was not aware of "the end". But from episode I got a feeling ... What? Why has it to end? Such a good show. O.k. they want to shoot a new series "Universe", but I believe sooner or later there will be some kind of continuation. Maybe the fans can do something about it too? >Hopefully I will be proven wrong!
I hope so too. All the best for you, Rodney and Judas Run!

Hmmmm. My first comment was eaten by the ether. Hope I can be coherent enough to gather my thoughts again.

I agree with Finn here. It was the characters, not the franchise that I was drawn to and then acting not the writing that kept me tuned in every week. I suspect I would have gotten over the cancellation a long time ago had it not been for a) the fact that I never believed they would get a movie off the ground and b) that the producers managed to diss SGA and its cast with every promotion of the shiny new SGU.

If the middle-aged, single professional is not the preferred demographic, can I have my money back? I'm thinking of presenting an itemized list to MGM and SyFy and demanding a refund.

So no, I am not surprised that it looks like there will be no SGA movie--I've been saying that all along. Better that you move onto other projects. I thoroughly enjoyed seeing you in The Closer (awesome show, eh?) and I'm looking forward to your proposed project with Syfy. Hell, I might even invest in satellite so I can see it live.

I don't know if I'm just getting cynical in my old age but I
can't help but think they are waiting for the figures for
Universe airing before they make up their minds whether it
is necessary to make it or not.

I hope they are just overloaded with the new show and all its
aspects and that 'Extinction' will be made because I have grown
fond of the Atlantis team and Rodney's bites (God of Sarcasm) and
although I love fanfiction, it just doesn't beat the real deal.

**fingers crossed** Here's hoping they find a clue and make it.
